Step One: Recognize the Problem

Whether it's about you or someone close to you, the first step in tackling nicotine addiction is recognizing the problem. How can you identify the addiction? Here are some signs:

  • you've tried to quit using nicotine but ended up giving in;
  • you avoid places or people where you can't smoke;
  • you reach for tobacco products when feeling stressed or anxious;
  • you continue using nicotine despite experiencing health issues;
  • you feel frustrated, emotionally unstable, tired, overly sensitive, or irritable when you don't get your fix;
  • you experience nicotine cravings and think about it often;
  • you feel restless, overly sensitive, and struggle to concentrate;
  • your sleep patterns are disrupted;
  • you feel drained of energy—sluggish, tired, and lacking vitality;
  • you experience physical symptoms like headaches, coughing, dry throat, increased mucus production, and muscle aches;

Here's an initial list for reflection and self-assessment.
